Ahote
or Ahoote (Spring Thunder Storm Kachina)
Signed &
numbered Lithograph, edition of 1000
This powerful figure is one of the most striking Hopi kachina dancers. This
kachina is named for the call he makes and it is primarily his songs that account
for his popularity. Part of the imagery of this kachina's mask is contained
in the circular symbols between his eyes and forehead, which are representative
of flowers. This dancer is a forecaster of the coming spring and a change in
weather. Ahote carries the bow and arrow inferring that he also has powers in
the hunt or even in warfare. The shell ornamentation and the parrot feathers
indirectly symbolize the tribes migrations to the four corners of the land and
directly illustrate trading practices that reached both coastal and southern
Mexican tribes. Ahote is a Plaza Dancer and usually dances in a group.
