Deer Dancer "Chop Kachina"
Signed & numbered Lithograph, edition of 1000

The Deer Dancer can be included among the most important of the Hopi Kachinas. The Deer Dancer's primary function is to increase the number of deer and improve the hunt through his ceremonial dance. The sticks in the kachina's hands (or on many occasions only the one stick is used), represent the deer's forelegs and the dance is an imitation of the flight of the deer. This kachina traditionally also has power over the rain, and for this reason his costume includes rain fringe on his leggings and moccasins which is reminiscent of the falling rain as the dancer moves and sways. The Deer Kachina is here depicted dancing by firelight in the Hopi village. His dance is accompanied by a Mudhead Kachina playing on the drum in the background. During the ceremonies the Mudhead also performs comic relief in his role as a clown.
