Humdinner
Signed and numbered Fine Art Print, edition of 150

This painting of a male Costas Hummingbird feeding on Eaton's Pensternmon was inspired by many such scenes I observed at Mesa Verde National Park. The pottery vessel is Mesa Verde Anasazi and was discovered in the park near the turn of the century by the crew of Dr. Jesse Fewkes. Dr. Fewkes was the first American archeologist to extensively excavate in the park. He was funded by The Smithsonian, so the bulk of the artifacts discovered by he and his crew were shipped back to Washington D.C. To research this painting I traveled to the Smithsonian where I found this vessel on the sixth floor of the Natural History Museum. It was in an asbestos contaminated vault. With mask and gloves on I was able to enter, photograph, sketch and research not only this vessel but also a large collection of Mesa Verde artifacts. A rocky Mountain Chipmunk rounds out the cast in this one of my favorite paintings.
