Prayer Feather
Signed and numbered lithograph, edition of 500
The prayer feather or "Paho" is a downy underfeather
taken from the eagle. The Paho is taken to a sacred shrine off in the canyons
of Mesa Verde National Park. The feather is tied to the juniper, a prayer is
made and the supplicant goes home. As the winds blow through the canyon it sets
up a vibration in the feather. This vibration sends the prayer to the spirit.
The flower is a Mariposa or Butterfly Lily. The butterfly
has always been a symbol of peace for the Native American, so who knows, maybe
this lily has sprung up as a sign that the prayer has been heard.
The water olla, once kept full, gave refreshment for
those who came to the shrine. It was found early in this century and is now
housed at the Anasazi Heritage Center in Cortez, Colorado.
