The
White Buffalo Dancer
Signed &
numbered Lithograph, edition of 1000
White Buffalo Dancer is a rare social dancer found only at the Jemez Pueblo
in Northern New Mexico. One method for distinguishing the costume of the social
dancer from that of the true kachina is the headdress. In almost every instance
the kachina dancer will wear a mask completely enclosing the head and especially
the face. The social dancers's head is not completely covered and usually the
headdress is not as highly stylized. The White Buffalo concept reached the Pueblos
via the ancient trade routes. It is an adaptation of the Plains Indians' dances
to the mighty herds of buffalo then prevalent. In keeping with tradition, the
White Buffalo carries the rattle in his right hand and the hunting bow in his
left. The turquoise and shell ornamentation is the personalization of the individual.
